Selectmen Look to Save Energy
- (July 15, 2008)
by:
Editor
In recent weeks the Board of Selectmen
have discussed having the new Town Manager look into automobile use
and proper automobiles for specific job. It was questioned as
to whether the use of former police cruisers were the best for other
departments.
Last week the School committee entered
into a three year contract with an energy consultant who will
guarantee savings greater than their contract value.
Last evening, the Board discussed
asking the Gas & Electric Department to conduct an energy audit of
town buildings. Selectman Rogers talked about one audit which
was conducted back in the early 1990's but not much has been
completed since. Selectman Bond raised the question of
creating a Green Committee in town similar to the one in Kingston,
MA.
The Board will be looking for people
to send in their ideas and whether they would like to participate in
such a committee.

Three Horses Rock Into The Sunset
- (July 11, 2008)
by:
Editor
Kicking off the summer concert series
on the front lawn of the Town Hall, Three Horses kicked up some dust
and rocked. With about 175 people on hand, the weather was
perfect, the music was perfect and there were many smiling faces.
Many people took advantage of the refreshments that were made
available for a small fee.
The music set included classic rock
that spans generations. Children, parents and grandparents
alike were singing along with the band.
The concert series continues through
the end of the summer. Check the Calendar of Events for more
information.
Thompson Street Group tries to Preserve
- (July 9, 2008)

The Committee for the Preservation of
Thompson Street is a group of citizens that have been meeting to
preserve Thompson Street in Middleborough. Home to the
remaining active dairy farm and several large tracts of agricultural
land, Thompson Street shows the historic farm side of Middleborough
that is slowly being lost to residential development.
Last nights meeting was for
strategizing on how they can preserve Thompson Street, whether by
Historic or Scenic designations or to approach large land owners to
help protect the land. Many ideas were bantered around by the
committee, including approaching the developer of Oak Point with a
plan to offer their assistance and support for several different
ideas in return for protection of open space on Thompson Street.
The Committee assisted in the
presentation given at the annual town meeting and would like to
preserve the nature that is Thompson Street. One must only
travel a few miles north to see what the Town of Halifax allowed on
their end of Thompson Street. Subdivision upon subdivision
stacked and packed on land that was once farmed. This group
will work to keep that from happening.
Their next meeting is scheduled for
August 7 at 7:30 PM at the East Middleborough 4H clubhouse on
Thompson Street.

The North Middleborough 79th Annual
4th of July Parade was a success. The morning started off with
sometimes heavy rains but it did not keep anyone away from the
parade route. The weather was perfect for the kickoff at 10 AM
and the parade went along for a good hour. Floats were
submitted byt many groups from the Girl Scouts to a working popcorn
machine on the "Corniest Float", from Middleborough Friends to
Reedy's Archery, there were many smiles that one would expect.
After the Parade, activities continued
at the Carnival at the Piece Playground with something for everyone.
Diving for coins and the Greasy pole. The Carnival always
entertains. The Carnival wrapped up its run on Sunday and
everyone had a good time.
